History of Princess Anne High School

In August 1954, the City of Virginia Beach proudly opened Princess Anne High School with 1,558 students and 62 teachers. Princess Anne was formed from the consolidation of three high schools that then served Princess Anne County--Creeds High School, Kempsville High School, and Oceana High School. The student population peaked in the early seventies with approximately 2,800 students. The service area of Princess Anne High School is approximately 13 square miles for regular instructional programs. Our school currently houses 2,000 students (1997). In addition, the West Building serves secondary level severely handicapped special education students from the entire city. The Princess Anne Center serves the needs of pregnant teems who choose to atten our special programs.

Princess Anne High School has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence. The ethnis and socioeconomic diversity of the student body presents a unique challenge to provide programs and curricula that meet the needs of all students. These include Advance Placement and honors courses, a multifaceted special education program, and a Naval Junior ROTC unit. Princess Anne High School is honored to be the first school in Hampton Roads to offer the pretigious International Baccalaureate diploma and to be designated as an IB School.

The mission of Princess Anne High School is to ensure that each student is empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the challenges of the future.
